Foods to Eat on a High Carbohydrates Diet

Carbohydrates are the nutrients which are food in a wide array of food items for example breads, rice, milk, beans etc. They also come in a variety of forms, the most common and abundant of which are sugars, fibres and starches. Every carbohydrate is basically built of a sugar molecule which is a union of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. The digestive system handle all carbohydrate the same way i.e. breaks down all the carbohydrates into single sugar molecules (as only they can cross into bloodstream).

The carbohydrates are neither all good nor all bad. Some of them promote health while excessive consumption of few leads to increase in the risk for diabetes and coronary heart disease. It may be generally perceived that carbohydrates are bad as they are the source of unflattering flab. But this is a wrong approximation of the fact. They are an important part of our diets.

The easily digestible carbohydrates are the ones that contribute to weight gain. These easily digestible carbs are broken into sugars which when not burned add to the fat content. But there are also carbohydrates which are comparatively difficult to break to sugar molecules and provide the body with many health benefits.

Fibres for example are put together in a way that they cannot be broken into sugars and so they pass through undigested. But the soluble fibres bind with the fatty substances in the intestines and carry them out as waste. This also lowers the low- density lipoprotein (LDL, or bad cholesterol) in the body.

It is thus not bad to consume carbohydrates; the thing that is important is to choose the good carbohydrates over the bad carbohydrates. A few food items which are high in carbohydrates are as follows:

Whole wheat bread

The whole wheat bread which may be used to replace the white breads in one’s diet are good source of carbohydrates. These breads though contain less carbohydrates overall than those in white breads. The kind of carbohydrates in the whole wheat bread serves for better health in comparison to the white breads.

The whole grains are also a good source of the carbohydrates and provide ample health benefits to the human body.

Beans

Beans are a brilliant source of slowly digested carbohydrates thus providing a health benefit. They are also high in proteins which serve as an added benefit.
